If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “best places for family photos near me” or “best outdoor locations for photos in raleigh,” you’re not alone.
One of the first questions I get as a Raleigh family photographer is:
“Where should we take our photos?”
And honestly? Raleigh has some of the most beautiful, versatile outdoor locations, especially during this season. Whether you’re dreaming of soft golden light, open fields, or something a little more structured and timeless, there’s a spot that will fit your family perfectly.
So I thought I’d walk you through some of the best outdoor locations for photos in Raleigh. Places I’ve photographed families before and would absolutely love to return to this season.
If you want a mix of natural beauty and clean, modern backdrops, the North Carolina Museum of Art is always a favorite.
The open fields here are perfect for that soft, glowy sunset look, while the walking paths and architectural elements add variety without feeling busy.
This location works beautifully for:
It’s one of those places where you can get both playful and polished images in one session.

Historic Oak View County Park feels like stepping into a slower, simpler time.
Between the white farmhouse, open fields, and wooden fences, it has that warm, nostalgic feel that works so well for family portraits with young children.
I especially love this spot for:
It’s the kind of place where kids can just be kids, and those are always the images parents treasure most.

The JC Raulston Arboretum (often referred to as the NC Arboretum locally) is a dream if you love gardens and seasonal blooms.
Depending on the time of year, you’ll find something different blooming, making it a beautiful option for spring family photos in Raleigh or softer, more romantic sessions.
This location is perfect for:
It feels a little more tucked away and intimate, which can be especially nice if you’re nervous about being in front of the camera.

If you’re okay with a short drive, Joyner Park is absolutely worth it.
This is one of my go-to spots for that wide-open field, golden hour glow that so many families love.
It’s especially great for:
Families from Raleigh, Cary, and Wake Forest all gravitate toward this location because of how consistently beautiful it is.

Fred Fletcher Park (often called Fletcher Park) is one of Raleigh’s quieter gems.
It has a little bit of everything, green space, historic elements, and soft light filtering through the trees.
This location works well for:
It’s easy, accessible, and never feels overwhelming, which is sometimes exactly what families need.

If you love water views, Lake Johnson Park is such a beautiful option.
Between the lake, wooded trails, and open sky, it offers a peaceful setting that feels a little removed from the busyness of everyday life.
I love this spot for:
There’s something about being near water that naturally helps everyone relax a little.

If you’re feeling unsure which location fits you best, here’s a simple way to think about it:
And if you’re still not sure, that’s completely okay. Helping you choose is part of the experience.
My studio is located in Raleigh, NC and I specialize in newborn, motherhood, and family portraiture for busy mothers who want beautiful artwork of their children.
Many families first come to me for seasonal outdoor portraits like these, and then return for newborn sessions or their baby’s first year. And honestly, that continuity is one of my favorite parts of this work.
Because it’s never just about the location.
It’s about capturing your family as you are right now, before everything changes again.
If one of these locations feels like you, I’d love to help you plan a session there this season.
These outdoor sessions are scheduled in a limited number each month to keep the experience relaxed and unrushed.
