Picture this… You’ve booked your session and are starting to plan what to wear for summer family photos in Raleigh. You find yourself stood in front of your closet beforehand thinking,
“I have absolutely nothing to wear,”
You are very much not alone.
As a Raleigh family photographer, I can confidently say that outfit planning is the number one thing moms stress about before their session. And honestly? I get it. You’re coordinating multiple people, trying to balance comfort with style, hoping everyone feels confident, and somehow also trying to create images that feel timeless enough to hang in your home for years.
That’s a lot of pressure for one outfit decision. So let me start here. You do not need to dress perfectly for your photos to feel beautiful. The best summer family photos in Raleigh happen when families feel comfortable, connected, and like themselves.

There’s something special about summer family photos in Raleigh. The warm air. Barefoot toddlers running through the grass. Golden sunlight filtering through the trees. The slower pace that somehow makes everyone soften a little.
Summer portraits tend to feel less formal and more connected, which is why I love them so much for families with young children. Your session doesn’t need to look stiff or overly styled to be beautiful. In fact, the most meaningful images are usually the ones where everyone feels the most natural.
That’s why I always encourage families to choose clothing that feels like an elevated version of their everyday style instead of trying to become someone else for photos. If you’re someone who lives in flowy dresses, amazing. If you’re more comfortable in linen pants and a tank top, that works beautifully too.
Your photos should feel like you.

Summer light is softer and warmer than many people expect, which means certain tones photograph beautifully outdoors.
For outdoor family photos in Raleigh, I typically recommend:
These colors photograph beautifully during golden hour and keep the focus on your family’s connection rather than distracting patterns or bold neon colors.
One important thing to remember:
You do not need everyone in matching white shirts and jeans. Instead, think about coordinating colors and textures. Linen, cotton, gauze, soft knits, and fabrics with movement always photograph beautifully during summer sessions.

One of the biggest things clients tell me after booking is how relieved they are to learn they don’t have to do all the planning themselves.
As part of my full-service experience, families have access to my client wardrobe to help alleviate even more stress and decision-making.
This includes carefully selected pieces for mothers and children that photograph beautifully and feel comfortable to wear. Many of the dresses and pieces you see throughout my portfolio are available directly through the studio.
The goal is simple:
Less stress. More confidence. More time focusing on your family instead of shopping carts and return labels. And if you still want guidance after looking through the wardrobe? I help with that too. I’m always happy to help coordinate outfits so everything feels cohesive without looking overly matched.

One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is choosing outfits that look beautiful standing still… but don’t work once kids start moving.
That’s why comfort matters so much. For moms especially, I always recommend choosing pieces you can move easily in and breathe comfortably in. Flowy dresses can be beautiful, but they’re absolutely not required. Some of my favorite sessions have included:
And kids will move. Your toddler will want to run. Your baby will want to be held. You’ll sit on blankets, pick children up, cuddle, walk, and probably sway a little without even realizing it.
As a Raleigh motherhood photographer, I care far more about how you feel than whether your outfit looks trendy. Because confidence photographs beautifully every single time.
When planning your outfits, it also helps to think about where these images will eventually live. Will they become part of a gallery wall? An heirloom album? Framed artwork in your living room?
Timeless clothing tends to age beautifully in printed artwork, which is one of the reasons I gently steer clients toward softer palettes and classic textures.
After the session, we meet for a design and ordering appointment where I help you turn your images into something tangible. Together, we can design:
Because your images deserve more than living on your phone. As a fine art photographer in Raleigh, this part of the process matters deeply to me. I want your children to grow up seeing themselves loved on the walls of your home.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed trying to decide what to wear for summer family photos in Raleigh, here’s my simplest advice:
The truth is, your children are not going to remember whether your dress was trendy. They’re going to remember how it felt to be held by you. And years from now, when you look back at these photos, that’s what you’ll care about too.

Summer is one of the most beautiful seasons for outdoor portraits in Raleigh, especially for families with young children. Between golden evening light, blooming gardens, and slower summer rhythms, it’s the perfect time to document your family exactly as you are right now.
Availability for summer sessions is intentionally limited each month to keep the experience relaxed and personalized. If you’ve been thinking about scheduling your family session, I’d love to help you plan something beautiful.

When your memories live where life happens, they become part of your family’s story, seen every day, touched often, and one day, passed down. They remind your children where they come from and show them how loved they’ve always been.
On your walls, in your hands, always surrounded by love
I believe your memories should live where life happens
