I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but your newborn isn’t going to stay this small forever. In fact, they won’t even stay this small for more than a few weeks. That’s why newborn portraits matter, because those tiny details won’t stay tiny for long.
As a mama of two, I’ve lived it. I know what it’s like to be deep in the fog of sleepless nights and endless feedings, where your brain is a blur and your phone is full of slightly blurry photos that never quite capture what your heart feels. But I also know this: there will come a day—sooner than you think—when your baby will look up at you and ask, “What did I look like when I was born?”
And oh, what a gift it is to be able to show them.
There’s this little window—about 5 to 14 days after birth—when your baby is still sleepy, curly, and impossibly small. It’s the moment where they still melt into your chest, where their legs naturally curl up like they’re still in the womb, and their eyelashes are just beginning to show.
This stage is fleeting. The newborn scrunch will fade. Their limbs will stretch out. Their eyes will open wide with curiosity. And that teeny-tiny, brand-new human? They’ll grow into a toddler before you’ve even caught up on sleep.
That’s why newborn portraits matter. Because these aren’t just pictures—they’re a way to bottle up a moment in time that would otherwise disappear.
Yes, I’ll photograph the tiny toes and wisps of hair, the wrinkled fingers and sleepy yawns—but I’ll also capture what this season feels like. The quiet calm of a baby swaddled in your arms. The awe in your partner’s eyes. The way your face softens when you look at your child.
You might feel a little tired, a little messy, a little unsure of what day it is—and that’s okay. We’re not aiming for perfect. We’re aiming for real. And real, in this season? That’s where the beauty lives.
I still love to show my kids their own newborn portraits. Their eyes light up as they point and laugh, “That’s ME?” There’s something deeply grounding for a child to see themselves that little, that loved, that known—before they even knew the world.
And one day, your child will ask the same thing. They’ll wonder what they looked like. They’ll want to hear about their first days in your arms. And these portraits will help you tell that story—not just with words, but with proof of the love that was there from the very beginning.
While 5–14 days is the sweet spot for those curly, sleepy newborn poses, beautiful images are still possible outside of that timeframe. If your baby is a little older, we simply adapt the session to be more relaxed, more awake, and more in tune with where your baby is.
The goal is never perfection—it’s presence. Whether they’re six days old or six weeks, we’ll create portraits that honor who they are and how deeply they are loved.
There’s a saying I love: the days are long, but the years are short. And nowhere is that more true than during those newborn weeks. Everything feels overwhelming and tender, and yet it moves so quickly you can hardly catch your breath.
These portraits are your chance to pause. To slow time, if only for a moment. To give your future self—and your child—a gift you’ll never regret.
After your session, we’ll turn your images into tangible keepsakes you can hold in your hands, hang on your walls, and pass down for generations. Whether it’s a custom fine art album, a framed newborn portrait, or a display box of favorite prints, your story deserves to live beyond your phone’s camera roll.
And if you’re looking to document more than just the newborn days, you might want to consider joining the First Year Membership. It includes 3 sessions in 15 months. Many choose to use their sessions at newborn, six months, and one year (and an optional petite maternity session, too!). Most of my families use it to create an heirloom album or “Grow With Me” framed series that tells the story of baby’s first year—beautifully and intentionally.
Beyond preserving newborn moments, displaying printed portraits in your home can have a huge impact on your child’s self-esteem. Studies have shown that when children see photographs of themselves, it significantly boosts their confidence and sense of belonging. These images serve as daily affirmations of their importance within the family unit. All while reinforcing feelings of love and security. By turning your newborn photos into tangible displays—wall art, albums, or framed prints—you’re not only capturing memories but also nurturing your child’s developing identity and self-worth.
The best time to book your newborn session is while you’re still pregnant—ideally in your second trimester. This ensures I have a spot saved for you. Once baby arrives, we’ll schedule a date based on how everyone is doing.
As your Raleigh newborn photographer, my goal is to make this experience feel easy, meaningful, and totally stress-free. I’ll guide you every step of the way—from wardrobe styling to soothing your baby—so you can simply show up and enjoy the moment.
