There is something about the newborn stage that makes you realize just how quickly ordinary things become meaningful.

The blanket you brought them home in.

The way they fit against Dad’s chest.

Their tiny fingers wrapped around yours.

The first photograph of your family as it looks now.

For this Raleigh newborn session, we created beautiful, simple portraits in my studio, but some of my favorite parts of the experience happened because of the thoughtful details we planned along the way.

A Relaxed Morning Starts at Home

Getting yourself ready for newborn photos just weeks after having a baby can feel like a lot.

You’re getting a newborn fed and dressed. You’re making sure Dad knows what he’s wearing. You’re gathering everything you might need. You’re probably operating on significantly less sleep than usual.

The last thing I want Mom worrying about is doing her own hair and makeup on top of everything else.

On the morning of this session, my professional hair and makeup artist went directly to their home.

Mom absolutely loved her, and she looked stunning.

But what I love just as much is that she didn’t have to go anywhere to make that happen. She could be in her own home with her new baby while someone else took care of her for a little while.

It’s not just about looking beautiful in photographs.

It’s about making the morning easier.

Arriving at the Studio and Letting Me Take Over

When this family arrived at my Raleigh studio, they were incredibly easygoing.

And honestly, that’s one of the best things you can bring to a newborn session.

Not a perfectly sleepy baby.

Not a perfectly timed feeding.

Just a willingness to relax and let me guide you.

They trusted me to direct them, position them, take the lead with their baby, and tell them exactly what I needed along the way.

That trust gives us room to create.

Newborn sessions aren’t meant to feel rushed. Babies need to eat. They need to be changed. Sometimes they sleep beautifully and sometimes they have other plans.

We work around them.

Mom and Dad don’t need to know what to do with their hands, how to hold the baby for the camera, where to stand, or whether everyone looks okay.

That’s my job.

Bringing a Piece of Dad’s Childhood Into Their Baby’s Portraits

One of the things they brought with them was Dad’s original receiving blanket from when he was a baby.

Of course we had to incorporate it.

I love when families bring something meaningful to a newborn session, particularly when it connects generations like this.

Someday their baby will be able to look at that photograph and know that the blanket wrapped around them once wrapped around their dad, too.

These details don’t have to be elaborate.

In fact, the simplest ones are often the most meaningful.

A receiving blanket.

A handmade sweater.

Something embroidered by a grandmother.

A tiny family heirloom.

Creating the First Family Portrait

Of course, a newborn session isn’t only about photographing the baby.

It’s also about documenting the family that was created, or changed, when that baby arrived.

We photographed baby alone, all of those tiny newborn details, and Mom and Dad with their new little one.

Those family portraits often end up being some of the most important photographs from the entire session.

And for this family, one of them was going to become something much bigger than a digital file.

Designing Something Specifically for Their Home

After the session, we met again for their ordering appointment.

This is where we get to take the photographs we’ve created and decide what you actually want to do with them.

For this family, we designed a framed family portrait specifically for the entryway of their home.

I love designing artwork for a particular space because we can think about everything together: the photograph, size, frame, proportions, and the room where it will ultimately live.

Instead of ordering a frame and hoping it works, we create it knowing exactly where it’s going.

And there is something especially meaningful about choosing a newborn family portrait for an entryway.

It’s one of the first things they’ll see when they come home.

It’s something their child will grow up walking past.

And over time, that photograph becomes more than a picture from their newborn session.

It becomes part of the home they grew up in.

The Sweetest Little Piece of Mail

This family is also part of my First Year Membership, which means this newborn session is only one chapter of the story we’ll photograph together.

As part of their membership, I also designed custom birth announcements using their newborn photographs.

Their announcements are complimentary for First Year Membership families, and I love getting to create something that feels cohesive with their session and gives them a beautiful way to introduce their newest little person to the people they love.

There is something about receiving a baby’s announcement in the mail that still feels so special in a very digital world.

And yes, I am always going to be a fan of photographs you can actually hold.

More Than a Newborn Photo Session

This is what I want a Signature Newborn Session to feel like.

Not a morning where new parents are rushing around trying to make everything perfect.

Not a session where you’re expected to arrive knowing exactly what to do.

And not a gallery of photographs that gets emailed to you and then sits on your computer while you promise yourself you’ll eventually print something.

Instead, we plan together.

Someone comes to your home and takes care of your hair and makeup.

You arrive at my studio and let me guide you.

We incorporate the things that matter to your family.

We create beautiful photographs.

Then we sit down together and decide which ones deserve to become part of your home.

For this family, that meant taking Dad’s old receiving blanket out of storage and giving it another little moment in their family’s story.

It meant custom birth announcements arriving in the mail.

And it meant creating a framed portrait of three people at the very beginning of their life together as a family, designed specifically for the entryway where they’ll see it every day.

The photographs are important. But what they become is important, too.
